The Traveller (by Ki, Hyeong-do)

I love knowing Korean. At times, like any language, it's a key to a whole new amazing world; and at times it's a wonderfully secret language.^^

Sitting on boat going down the Chao Praya River here in Bangkok earlier, I was re-reading a poem by Korean poet Ki Hyeong-do (1960-1989). It's called The Traveller and I've tried to give a fair translation of it below.

The Traveller

He picks up his worn-out body and throws it onto the bed.
His mind is full - a miscellany of things from long ago, all jangling together at once.
Whose voice is this? What kind of tales will it have to start with?
I'd come here enthusiastically on foot. I haven't even shown a sullen face.
Oh, I don't understand. I wonder what on earth the people here see and whether they can tell what kind of person I really am.
He gives a sigh of grief. He wanted to live a completely different way. Don't I have the same rights too?
The old woman encountered in the corner, up to the cat I met in the bar, took no notice of me.
He mutters. What it is that dragged him out here, he can't even remember any more.
Actually, maybe he can. He looks at his longish, slender legs, stuck into his
Old, worn shoes and, like an animal, he lets out a howl. If things are like this, where on earth else to go?
